Hui Na Menehune and Junior Library Club

Hui Na Menehune (Grades 4 and 5)

Description

Two to three students from each 4th and 5th grade class will be chosen in the beginning of each school year to make up MWES’s Hui Na Menehune Library Service Club.  These students will assist the Librarian with the daily operations of the library, such as helping patrons locate books, checking books in and out, shelving books, straightening shelves, and maintaining a positive learning environment.  Hui Na Menehune meetings will be held at least once a month during their lunch and/or 2nd recess.  Hui Na Menehune Library Club is also a Book Club Study Group.  They will help Librarian promote literacy and will participate in the Hawaii State Nene Awards Program.  More information regarding this is shared throughout the year.

Recruiting and Selection

Librarian will be recruiting interested 4th and 5th grade students during the 1st or 2nd quarter.  Interested students are required to fill out an application, get a teacher recommendation, and turn in applications on time.

Junior Library Club (Grades K and 3)

Description

This program is geared to help students gain and share a sense of responsibility, pride, and citizenship toward their Library Learning Center.  Junior Library Club members will see that the Library is left in the “same or better condition” than it was in before their class came.  They will also report back to class to share their findings via the “L & L” checklist to show areas where classes are strong and where they need to improve.

Recruiting and Selection

We will be looking for two students from each grade K -3 classes every semester/year.  Teachers will decide whether to select students on their own or have their class make the selection.
