Principal's Message

Aloha Mililani Waena Families,

Our fourth quarter is off to a great start! Students have settled into their school routines and instruction has made learning a fun, engaging experience.

As we begin this new quarter, I think to the many events soon upon us such as the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA). In the second half of April, our third, fourth, and fifth graders will take the annual SBA. This statewide assessment measures achievement in reading and math. If possible, schedule appointments in the afternoon during the last two weeks of April so your child will not need to make up the exam. In this time of testing, we also recognize the importance of monitoring our keiki's social/emotional needs. Emotions play an important role in signaling whether a child might be struggling in school. Some students may be performing fine academically, but facing emotional difficulties. I'm asking parents to please pay attention to what your child shares with you outside of school and alert us to any difficulties they are having. I also ask you to help them get adequate amount of sleep and start the day with a nutritious breakfast.

Student safety, in addition to academics, is one of our most important goals. With the recent events that have been happening here in our neighborhood and nation, we installed a CCTV video surveillance system that monitors the perimeter of our campus 24 hours a day. Students attend the restroom in pairs and we monitor the presence of visitors on campus. Safety drills like fire, lockdown, and evacuation are practiced and we continue to work with the Department to Education to ensure the safety of our children.

In conclusion, I want to share how proud I am to be a part of Mililani Waena. The accreditation team from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges commended our school community for its collaborative, friendly, and hard working culture. The results from the accreditation visit will be generated in the next few months.

Thank you very much for being a part of our team that works together to ensure the best possible education for your child.

Sincerely,
Troy TamuraPrincipal
