Principal's Message

March 2017

Dear Mililani Waena Families,

The 3rd quarter sure whizzed by!  Our students participated in a variety of activities in class and afterschool recognizing that learning happens in a variety of settings.  Our Maker Space program provided students with an opportunity to design, create, engineer, and explore using a host of supplies ranging from recycled materials, electrical circuits, and mini robots.  Students also competed in the district National History Day (NHD) competition with 12 students entering and 8 being selected to move on to the State level competition.  All of the student participants were very impressive!  Each project addressed the theme “Taking A Stand.”  The students conducted research, crafted written pieces, made websites, and performed skits that demonstrated their topics of interest.  Please stay tuned for examples of the students’ outstanding work on our NHD site.  For the very first time we also entered a team into the Sea Perch competition sponsored by the Coast Guard allowing our students to create and conduct under water missions.  Thank you to the staff coordinators and all of the parents that got involved to allow our students access to these learning opportunities!

Did you know that we have a life saver on our campus?  Actually, we have two!  Ava Cabasug (Gr 5) and Mia Cabasug (Gr 2) were recognized by the Maui County for their heroic effort this summer.  While on vacation on Maui, Mia noticed a boy drowning in the hotel pool.  She informed her sister Ava who quickly got her dad to assist.  The Cabasug’s caring actions resulted in the boy being removed from the pool where first responders could provide the necessary medical care he needed.  Way to go Cabasug’s!

As we go off to spring break and enjoy some much needed time to rejuvenate, please be safe in your endeavors!  Quarter 4 will be here before we know it so we want to make sure that everyone is safe and healthy!  Continue to check our school’s website for more information about our summer program and upcoming events and news!

Thank you for participating on our Wayfinding journey as we navigate our path to being self-directed learners!

Mahalo,
