HOMEWORK FOR OUR NEXT MEETING!
The students have been given homework to bring back to our next meeting. Their job is to discuss the three topics of interest they came up with during our meeting on Tuesday, September 24th with a parent, guardian, or older family member. During our meeting next Tuesday, October 1st from 2:15 - 3:30 Mrs. Boehning and I will help them finalize their choice and we will get them started with their graphic organizer to gather information.
We have asked for them to think of topics that interest them that have to do with "Breaking Barriers in History".
- The topic should be an event or a historical figure which "broke through a barrier" sometime between 1910 and 1980
- The event should have preceded some type of significant change for a group of people
- I also believe that topics which are relevant to the students' personal interests and background have been very successful in the past
Our only meeting next week will be on Tuesday, October 1st from 2:15 - 3:30. I will finalize and post the calendar for the 2nd quarter before the beginning of Fall Break.

At Mililani Waena Elementary, fourth and fifth-grade students who express interest during the first quarter are given an opportunity to participate in our NHD program. Through an analysis of students' classwork and writing assignments, the final NHD team will be determined. Final selections to the program are determined by school faculty and administration.
Once selected, students learn to do a thesis-driven research project from October through February and get to present their projects at the district level competition in December.
We will meet on Tuesday, September 24th and Tuesday, October 1st from 2:15 - 3:30 pm in room B2-D. A schedule for 2nd quarter will be sent home before Fall Break.
